High energy bills Aside from the price of electricity and heating fuel it is common to trace a high energy bill to inefficient heating and cooling equipment, old or poorly maintained ductwork, inefficient doors and windows, insufficient insulation and air leaking through exterior walls and ceilings and floors. Sometimes it is a single problem leading to your high energy bills, but more often it is the sum of a lot of small problems that are difficult to find.Mold, mildew or musty odors Mold, mildew or musty odors Water leaks and high humidity are common concerns in Florida. Both of these items can lead to mold and to wet musty smells and our homes or businesses. Preventing leaks is a full-time job and requires a watchful eye and a preventative maintenance program. Once leaks have begun it is important to repair them immediately to prevent mildew and mold. High humidity is a constant battle in Florida. As we enter and exit our buildings we allow humidity into the interior that must be conditioned by our air conditioners to remove the moisture. Additionally our homes breathe and allow certain amount of moisture to infiltrate in and out through our walls. Our air conditioners must be in good working order to keep the humidity and temperature balanced in our homes and businesses. Hot and Cold Rooms Temperature differences between rooms in our homes and businesses are not uncommon. We have heat gain through the walls and roof as the sun rises and sets on the opposite side of the building. These temperature differences can be exaggerated by poorly designed ductwork to deliver too much or too little conditioned heated or cooled air. Our analysis can determine whether the hot and cold conditions are due to the ductwork, inadequate or poor insulation, air infiltration or leaking, or a faulty or antiquated air conditioning system. Indoor Air Quality Most Florida homes were not designed or built around very strict energy efficiency or effective building energy codes. Our current building codes require sealing around all plumbing wiring lighting and ductwork. Older homes have small and numerous air leaks around these penetrations that were never sealed. This infiltration of air through walls, floors and ceilings is often foul smelling and pulls into the interior air of the poorest quality. Quality fresh air is typically by design and requires exhaust fans to remove humidity and foul air and fresh air intakes to pull in clean filtered air that can be conditioned by our air conditioner or heating systems. Air leakage and improperly installed insulation can waste 30% or more of the homes energy. Sealing these cracks and penetrations is the first step towards making your home more energy efficient and saving you money. |
